It seems today if one "big" christian book comes out then every body and his brother is praising it as the next best thing to the bible. such is the case with this overhyped and overated purpose driven life. One of the best critical reviews of this book i have seen have stated that the bad thing about it is it makes you feel bad if your not doing exactly what it says.
The problem with these kind of books is they tend to cater towards what i call the "fanatics" those who care to shout out every single bible verse they know to everyone , those who use "god speak i.e. christian terms as much as they can in every sentence... it is ok but it really doesnt address what chrisitans need to really focus on. that is. doing what jesus was here to do in the first place. connecting with others, reaching out to those in need, and caring. it seems today that its all about the latest christian book and people are more interested in sitting around in bible studies over the same book that has been poured over so many times...instead of really connecting and digging deep and helping each other and those in need. this book has little relevance to the real world today in my opinion and feeds more of the needs of people who are already ingulfed in 100 such books already.
it has been said that this book has helped reached some people to christ...but in my opinion thats not the way to do it., hands on personal connections is what is needed.
you walk into a christian bookstore today and you will find the same stuff over and over and over in books this is no different. instead of really helping christians to make a real diffrence in their lives and the lives of others its just another in my opinion "mindless" workbook that can be used in small groups and others to make you feel like you are a "better christian" if you complete it.
please look for something else. everyone has this.. even i have a copy (it was given to me) and i say there are far better books out there you can get with your money.
its overated and over-hyped im sorry but rick warren is just like every other "big name" pastor out there today catering to the "holier then thou crowd" rather then standing up making a real challange to us and to churchs to change and make a real difference.
its been done before. Next.

Started reading, but was more driven to In Search of Balance by Dr. Richard A. Swenson

Started reading, but was driven to In Search of Balance by Dr. Richard A. Swenson. Don't know why I switched, but it was the right fit.
In Search of Balance should be read by all that are involved in a hetic life balancing faith, home, wife, child, and work. Basically, the life system we live in. This book is faith based on on target with our current times.
I'll get back to Purpose Driven Life later.

This book really helped me put things into perspective. It is 100% bible based and I loved it so much I bought copies for my dearest friends...

Not a self-help book.

I once bought a copy of The Purpose Driven Life off of a used book rack not knowing that it was a religious book, but because I had been wanting to focus my life by directing all of my actions with some chosen purpose (if only I could decide which purpose). It's not the first religious book that I've bought disguised as a self help book (see my review of Charles Lever's If You Can't Climb The Wall, Build A Door!). I can't recall how I ended up getting rid of it.
