Editorial Reviews

Product Description

This is the extraordinary memoir of the 22nd Infantry Regiment, a unit that Ernest Hemingway stayed with for five months, from the drive across France to the bloody Battle of the Hurtgen Forest. It is a moving account of men who enlisted to fight in a just cause. It touches on the chaos of war and how accidental atrocities-such as the use of poison gas by American artillery on November 15, 1944 -- were narrowly averted. In addition, it is a journal surprisingly rich with humor -- from how men learn all about "the right way, the wrong way, and the Army way" to those incongruous moments of comedy that can occur even on the battlefield. The result is a memoir so rich in character, detail, and atmosphere that the reader will feel that he is shoulder-to-shoulder with men from the "Greatest Generation."

A Soldiers Journal
Rating (5)

A story of how an everyday American Citizen handles all of the situations incountered with becoming a soldier during WWII. Joe faces all of his challanges with bravery and exceptional ability. The journal format makes for very easy reading. All of the boredom of being in the Military has been left out.
Highly recomend,
Alan Sosnowitz

this is the only genuine WW II journal I am aware of: all others are memoirs. I was rivited by this book. I STRONGLY recommend it for anyone interested in military history.

This was a pretty good book... makes me think of the old maxim: The general and the captain are giving opposing orders again and I just got seriously wounded... I would highly reccomend this book to all who are intereseted in milatry history and the life of a soldier... great book especially in today's day and age.
