Read something BY Churchill instead of just ABOUT him

I sought out to find this set of books after reading several books about Winston Churchill. I was tremendously impressed by the man; his many experiences, hobbies, character and leadership. That he was a prize winning author intrigued me greatly. Surely he had something worthwhile to say in his books.

After five years and several readings, I believe that this is indeed true.

The underlying theme is the role of pivotal figures throughout history in a long and storied development of the government, legal system and character of the english speaking peoples. These systems and attitudes guide and impact our lives every day, yet do we understand where they came from?

I believe Churchill does a very credible job in throwing some light on the subject.

While absorbing the underlying story, I have met some fascinating historical characters in the context of their time. Most lives take but a chapter, but in this brief space of pages, their personalities shine forth. In volume 1 for example, you meet Alfred the Great, William the Conquerer, the sad figure of Henry VI, the brutal Richard III and a host of others. Powerful lives and people of action come to life on each page.

Another theme of book is that it is couched in action. Churchill was a man of action, and he portrays and judges his subject in terms of their actions. This makes the books quite readable and reinforces the 'story' aspect. Also, he reminds us to judge these people in the terms of their time. And I think this is much to his credit.

This is a set that is amenable to reading straight through or at random. Highly recommended. Thank you Sir Winston Churchill!
